The City Through Its Mutable Form

The city is a vast complex of buildings, houses, streets, avenues, businesses, etc. Designed in an uncommitted and adaptable way to its inhabitants, it is always bustling with people moving through, experiencing, and building this urban space daily. However, this space is often overshadowed by the routines of its residents and passersby, who, due to habit or social conventions, fail to notice the surrounding architecture.

About Me.

"I see the city as a space filled with diverse places, offering visual and architectural stimuli ready for the observer to enter or be consumed by them." — Paulo Juno

As a visual artist and printmaker, my practice is deeply rooted in the city and urban architecture, not only as visual elements but as poetic manifestations that transcend time and space. Since 2014, I have dedicated my research and artistic expression to the representation of the city, exploring its various facets and layers through techniques such as painting, drawing, photography, video, installation, and especially printmaking. In my work, I use common construction materials from urban works, imprinting them onto paper and creating a unique stamping technique where the city's traces become immortalized on the page.

For me, the city is a living organism, in constant transformation. The bricks, cracked concrete, and graffiti on the walls — these are vibrant memories that resonate in the present. Seeing an urban ruin awakens unease in people, but for me, ruins are vibrant memories that preserve the past while simultaneously creating an identity in the present. As Nelson Brissac says, "He lives in the ruins of others," and it is in the ruins of the city that I find the pulse of a past that reconfigures itself in the present, without the need for reconstruction.

My search is not to tell the stories of former residents or the factories that once stood there, but to explore the identity of concrete, ruins, and urban objects. Each piece of cement or fallen wall carries fragments of a history that remains in space, waiting to be reinterpreted.

In 2015, I expanded this exploration into the field of graphic design, where digigraphic printmaking emerged as a natural way to integrate my visual experiments with the urban environment. Using graphic software, the computer screen became my matrix, and there, I manipulate images that translate my aesthetic perception of the city, transforming concrete and architecture into plastic and sensory forms. This technique allows me to experiment with the transition from physical material to digital, exploring the complex layers that the city offers in its various forms of visual expression.

The city is, for me, a space of transgression and creation, where architecture is not merely a backdrop but a pulsating body, full of stories and meanings that unfold through concrete and memory. My work reflects this constant search to understand and represent the urban, through a sensory and intellectual fusion that engages with the layers that make up the space we inhabit.

In every empty street, every ruin, every line of concrete, I find poetry. The urban, for me, is a living metaphor — where desire, time, and history converge in a single place.
